The Business of Space: To Infinity and Beyond

On October 15, 2025, Ventech brought together leaders from the space industry for The Business of Space: To Infinity and Beyond, an evening exploring the technologies, opportunities, challenges, and policies shaping the rapidly evolving space economy.
Held at the Cabrillo Pavilion in Santa Barbara, the event brought the Central Coast business and technology community together for a conversation spanning satellite imaging, Earth observation, space infrastructure, commercialization, and the legal frameworks that will help define the future of business beyond Earth.
A Look at the New Space Economy
Space is no longer solely the domain of governments and national space agencies. A growing commercial ecosystem is transforming how we observe our planet, gather and use data, build infrastructure, and approach opportunities beyond Earth.
The evening brought together leaders working at the forefront of that transformation:
Megan Tremer, President of Teledyne Space Imaging, shared perspective from a company with a long history of developing advanced imaging technologies for space exploration and scientific missions.
Todd Master, Chief Operating Officer of Umbra, brought insight into the growing commercial space data industry and the role of high-resolution synthetic aperture radar imagery in commercial, government, and scientific applications.
Colleen Graffy, Professor of Law at Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, added another critical dimension to the conversation: the evolving legal and policy frameworks necessary for a growing global space economy.
Together, the panel offered a look at the space industry not simply as a technological frontier, but as an emerging business ecosystem where technology, investment, infrastructure, policy, and international cooperation increasingly intersect.
From Satellite Imaging to Space Law
Throughout the evening, the conversation explored both the possibilities ahead and the real-world challenges that come with expanding commercial activity in space.
From advanced imaging systems and Earth intelligence to the infrastructure supporting new space-based businesses, panelists offered perspectives drawn from industries actively building the technologies behind the next generation of space exploration and commercialization.
The discussion also highlighted an increasingly important question: as commercial opportunities expand, what rules will govern them?
Professor Graffy explored the role of space law in creating the certainty businesses need to operate and innovate while also addressing responsibility and preventing conflict. Questions surrounding space debris, traffic management, international governance, and rights to resources beyond Earth demonstrate just how closely technological innovation and policy will need to evolve together.
The Central Coast's Role in Space Innovation
The evening also highlighted something happening much closer to home: the Central Coast's own role in the space economy.
Companies throughout the region are contributing technologies and expertise with applications far beyond California. Teledyne Space Imaging has helped develop imaging technologies used in major scientific missions, while Santa Barbara-based Umbra is advancing satellite-based Earth observation through its constellation of synthetic aperture radar satellites.
That combination of established aerospace expertise, emerging technology companies, research institutions, and entrepreneurial talent gives our region a meaningful place in an industry with truly global reach.
Connecting the Next Generation
The evening wasn't only about today's space industry. It was also about the people who may help shape what comes next.
Several students from UC Santa Barbara's Master of Technology Management program were sponsored to attend the event, giving them an opportunity to hear directly from industry leaders and connect classroom learning with the technologies, strategies, and business challenges being tackled in the real world.
Creating those connections between students, established leaders, entrepreneurs, and the broader technology community is an important part of building a strong innovation ecosystem on the Central Coast.
Thank You for Joining Us
Thank you to our panelists Megan Tremer, Todd Master, and Colleen Graffy for sharing their expertise and perspectives, and to Kevin Riley and Jorge Mercado for helping guide the evening's conversation.
And thank you to everyone who joined us at the Cabrillo Pavilion for an evening looking beyond today's boundaries and toward the future of technology, business, and innovation in space.
At Ventech, we're proud to create opportunities for the Central Coast community to connect directly with the people and ideas shaping emerging industries.
The future of business isn't limited to Earth, and we can't wait to see where it goes next.
